One of the most important parts of your AC system is the evaporator coil.
In order for your AC to do its job correctly, it needs to direct heat outdoors; this is accomplished by circulating a refrigerant between two sets of coils. One is called the condensing coil (located outside), and the other is the evaporator coil (located in the inside unit).
As the refrigerant circulates, the evaporator coils become very cold. A large fan then pulls the warm air across the coils and the heat is exhausted. The newly cooled air then flows into your ducts and is distributed throughout the building. When this process is disrupted, you will experience a lack of cool air.

What are Common Evaporator Coil Problems?
The process of pulling air across the coils can lead to problems that can actually be prevented with regular maintenance.
Dirty coils: A potential problem can occur when dust and dirt are pulled into the system from outside. The dust and dirt will accumulate on the coils by sticking to the moisture on the coils. Bacteria can also develop if the components are not properly cleaned and drained on a regular basis.
Frozen coils: Sometimes your evaporator coils can freeze. Frost on the coils, if severe enough, can prevent your system from working altogether. Frozen coils are often caused by low refrigerant levels. In some cases, frozen coils can also be attributed to insufficient airflow over the coils; this in turn is due to clogged air filters or faulty fans (damaged fins on an air conditioning coil will cause the fans to rotate improperly).
Leaking refrigerant: A refrigerant leak can occur from a hole as small as a pinhole. This is often solved by replacing your coils. Most refrigerant leaks are due to debris entering the system or building up on the coils. Following a regular maintenance plan will help your system avoid problems and save you money in the long run.
What Can You Do To Prevent Evaporator Coil Problems?
There are regular maintenance tasks you can perform on your own to keep your AC system and evaporator coils working efficiently.
Make sure there are no trees in a position that will allow debris to fall on your AC’s outside unit. Wash off your unit periodically with a garden hose to keep dirt and dust from building up.
The most important action to take is to have your system inspected on a regular basis by your technician. We will perform comprehensive maintenance checks that will help your system last longer.
